Sorb Engineers was founded in 1964 by brothers Bob and Bert Simpson, initially in High Wycombe. In 1966, England’s world cup winning year, we moved to our present site on Fieldhouse Lane, Marlow, one of the very first buildings on the estate, when the surrounding area was stables and a farm. The business park has since changed completely, with multi-million pound buildings all around, and Sorb has stayed in the centre of it, close to the M40, M4 and M25.
Always investing
Our policy has always been to buy the latest technology. In 1982 we bought a CNC punch press when most local sheet metal companies relied on manual presses. In 1994 we bought a £250,000 LVD Helius 1.5 kW laser, the first such LVD machine in the country. A 2 kW machine followed in 1999, and in 2007 both were replaced by the Prima 4 kW with a 3 m x 1.5 m sheet capacity and a robotic storage and serving tower.
The people
Mike Simpson, Bob’s son, joined after Bert retired in 1988 and became Managing Director in 1999. Andy Proniw became Production Manager in 2001, and Daniel Simpson joined in 2014 to carry the family business on. Several staff are now in their second decade with the company. Sorb became Sorb Engineers Ltd in 2001.
We remember Bob Simpson, who died in August 2021 aged 89, and his brother Bert, who died in January 2023 aged 95.
